Buying a Secondhand iPhone? Get It Assessed Before You Pay

A secondhand iPhone that turns on, unlocks, and looks clean can still be hiding a blacklisted IMEI, a swapped battery, or water damage the seller doesn’t even know about. The listing photo never tells you that.

What Can Actually Go Wrong When You Buy a Secondhand iPhone?

These are ranked by how often they actually catch buyers out, not by how dramatic they sound.

1. 1. Activation Lock still tied to the seller’s Apple ID

   If Find My iPhone isn’t fully removed before the sale, the phone can lock you out permanently the moment it’s reset or updated — and only the original owner can release it. This is the single most common issue we see with private sales.

2. 2. A blacklisted or reported-stolen IMEI

   A phone reported lost or stolen — even by someone other than your seller, further back in its history — gets blocked from mobile networks. It can look completely normal on Wi-Fi and still be unusable as a phone.

3. 3. Outstanding finance on the device

   If the phone was bought on a payment plan that hasn’t been paid off, some carriers can remotely lock or blacklist it even after you’ve paid the seller in full.

4. 4. Battery health worse than advertised

   “Good battery life” isn’t a number. A quick check of the actual battery health percentage often reveals a battery well below what the description implied.

5. 5. Non-genuine parts already fitted

   A previous screen or battery replacement using aftermarket parts isn’t always disclosed, and can mean reduced True Tone accuracy, dimmer brightness, or a battery that degrades faster than expected.

   A phone that works fine today can still have internal moisture damage from months ago, sitting there as a ticking clock. Internal moisture sensors reveal this even when there’s no visible sign at all.

7. 7. Grey import or region-locked stock

   Phones imported from other regions can have different warranty coverage, missing eSIM support, or network band limitations that only show up once you’re already using it day to day.

What to Check Yourself Before You Even Meet the Seller

These take a few minutes and can rule out the worst-case scenarios before you arrange to meet.

• Ask for the IMEI (found in Settings > General > About, or on the box) and check it against a carrier’s blacklist checker before agreeing to buy.
• Ask for a screenshot showing Find My iPhone is off, taken from the seller’s own Settings, before you meet in person.
• Ask directly whether the screen or battery has ever been replaced, and with what type of part — a seller who doesn’t know is a bigger red flag than one who tells you honestly.
• Compare the listing photos closely for frame gaps, misaligned buttons, or screws with scratched heads, which can indicate a previous opening of the device.

What to Check in Person Before You Pay

1. Check Settings > General > About for the model, serial number, and confirm it matches the IMEI you were given beforehand.
2. Check battery health in Settings > Battery > Battery Health, and confirm it matches what was described.
3. Test Face ID, all cameras, the speaker, and the charging port directly, not just a glance at the screen.
4. Confirm the seller’s Apple ID is fully signed out and the phone is ready to be set up under your own account.
5. Do a full factory reset together before you hand over payment, so you both confirm Activation Lock is genuinely gone.

What a Free Pre-Purchase Assessment Actually Checks

This is where a professional check goes further than anything a buyer can confirm alone.

1. 1. Full IMEI and blacklist verification

   Checked against carrier and international blacklist databases, not just a basic online lookup.

2. 2. Internal moisture sensor check

   Reveals prior water exposure even when the phone shows no visible symptoms and passed every function test.

3. 3. Genuine parts verification

   Confirms whether the screen, battery, and camera are original Apple components or previously replaced with aftermarket parts.

4. 4. Battery health and charging diagnostic

   Gives you the actual current battery percentage, not a description of “good battery.”

5. 5. Full function and sensor test

   Face ID, all cameras, speakers, microphones, and charging tested properly, the same way we’d test a phone coming in for a repair.

Buyer Self-Check vs Professional Assessment

Red Flags to Walk Away From

• Price significantly below market for the model and condition described, with no clear explanation.
• Seller refuses a video call or in-person meeting, insisting on shipping first.
• Seller won’t remove Find My iPhone before you meet, or gets defensive when asked.
• Pressure to pay quickly — “someone else is interested right now” urgency tactics.
• Reluctance to meet at a neutral, public location, especially somewhere like a repair store where the phone could be properly checked.
